Chandelier Sizing, Hanging Height & Care

Most chandelier questions come down to three numbers: how wide, how low, and how bright. Diameter follows the room — add length and width in feet and read the sum as inches, or size to two-thirds of the dining table's width when the fixture hangs over one. Drop follows the ceiling: keep 7 feet of clearance underfoot in an open room, or 30 to 36 inches above a tabletop. Brightness follows the floor area at roughly 20 lumens per square foot, layered across several fixtures rather than forced through one. Beyond that it comes down to material and upkeep — crystal, glass and metal each behave differently, and plated finishes need gentler cleaning than most people expect. The answers below cover the questions our design team fields most often.
