Choosing the right chandelier size is the single biggest factor in whether a fixture looks intentional or gets lost in the room. Too small, and even a beautiful crystal chandelier reads as an afterthought; too large, and it overwhelms the space. This guide covers the standard sizing rules designers use for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, foyers and kitchens - and the calculator below turns your own room measurements into an exact diameter, drop and brightness target in seconds.

How to measure your room for a chandelier

Three numbers drive every chandelier size decision: the room's length and width (or your dining table's width, if the fixture hangs over a table), and your ceiling height. Measure wall to wall in feet, then use the calculator or the rules below.

What size chandelier for a room?

The classic designer formula: add the room's length and width in feet, and read the total as inches. A 14 ft by 12 ft living room (26 total) suggests a chandelier around 26 in in diameter. This works well for living room chandeliers and foyer chandeliers; for other rooms, adjust the proportion:

  • Living room. Use the full length + width total, 20-60 in range. A large modern or crystal chandelier can anchor an open-plan space.
  • Dining room. Size to the table, not just the room: chandelier diameter should be about 12 inches narrower than the table width. A 42 in round table suits a 24-30 in fixture.
  • Bedroom. Scale down to roughly 65% of the room-sum total - a bedroom chandelier should feel like a jewel, not a centerpiece competing with the bed.
  • Foyer / entryway. About 80% of the room-sum total for a single-story entry; for double-height foyers, see our staircase & stairwell lighting guide.
  • Kitchen island / breakfast nook. Smaller and more practical - around 55% of the room-sum total, often as a pair or trio rather than one large fixture.

Enter your room type, ceiling height, length and width (and table width, for dining rooms) to get your exact diameter, hanging height, brightness and light count.

Chandelier hanging height & drop

Over a dining table, the standard rule is 30-36 inches between the tabletop and the bottom of the chandelier for an 8 ft ceiling, adding about 3 inches for every additional foot of ceiling height. In a living room, foyer or bedroom with no table underneath, keep the bottom of the fixture at least 7 feet (84 in) above the floor so it clears anyone walking beneath it.

How bright should a chandelier be? (lumens by room)

Brightness needs vary by room use - dining rooms and kitchens need more task-level light than a bedroom. Quick reference for total fixture output:

Room Recommended total lumens
Bedroom (~150 sq ft) 1,800-2,500 lm
Living room (~200 sq ft) 3,500-5,000 lm
Foyer (~100 sq ft) 2,000-3,000 lm
Dining room (~180 sq ft) 4,500-6,500 lm
Kitchen / breakfast nook (~120 sq ft) 3,000-4,500 lm

Warm white 2700K-3000K suits most residential interiors. A dimmer lets one modern chandelier or crystal chandelier work for both bright everyday use and softer evening ambiance.

Chandelier styles & finishes that work by room

  • Crystal chandeliers - dining rooms, foyers and living rooms; reflective crystal amplifies light and reads as luxury.
  • Modern & minimalist chandeliers - clean lines for contemporary living rooms and bedrooms; black or gold metalwork.
  • Drum chandeliers - soft, diffused light that suits dining rooms and transitional interiors.
  • Round & ring chandeliers - a versatile silhouette for living rooms, foyers and open-plan spaces.
  • Flush & semi-flush ceiling chandeliers - the right call for rooms with low ceilings (under 8 ft) where drop clearance is tight.

Frequently asked questions

What size chandelier do I need for my room? Add the room's length and width in feet; the total is a good starting diameter in inches. Adjust down for bedrooms and kitchens, and size dining room fixtures to the table instead of the room.

How far should a chandelier hang above a dining table? 30-36 inches above the tabletop for a standard 8 ft ceiling, adding roughly 3 inches for every additional foot of ceiling height.

How low can a chandelier hang in a living room? Keep the bottom at least 7 feet above the floor in any walkway or open area so it clears foot traffic.

What size chandelier for a small bedroom? Roughly 65% of the room-sum diameter - most bedroom chandeliers land between 14 and 24 inches.

Can chandelier size and drop be customized? Yes - many of our chandeliers are available with adjustable or custom cable/rod lengths, which matters most for tall ceilings and open floor plans.
