Staircase & Stairwell Lighting Guide: Sizes, Brightness & Ideas
A staircase is the most vertical space in a home, which makes it the hardest — and the most rewarding — area to light. The right staircase chandelier does two jobs at once: it fills the open vertical void with a single confident focal point, and it provides safe, even staircase lighting across every tread and landing. Whether you have a soaring two-story foyer, a tight spiral, or a simple straight run, this guide walks through how to choose lighting for a stairwell by size, brightness and style — and our size calculator below gives you exact numbers in seconds.
What is a stairwell chandelier?
A stairwell chandelier is a decorative fixture designed for staircases and tall vertical spaces. It is usually taller or longer than a standard chandelier and is meant to be seen across multiple levels, which makes it the centerpiece of any staircase lighting scheme. Long cascading chandeliers, crystal chandeliers for staircases, and multi-light staircase pendant compositions are the strongest choices for open, multi-level spaces.
How to choose staircase lighting by stairwell type
Start with the shape of your space — it decides everything else.
- Two-story / double-height foyer (open). The classic home for a statement foyer chandelier. You want vertical presence: a long chandelier for staircase voids, a cascading design, or a multi-tier high ceiling staircase chandelier.
- Spiral staircase. A central spiral staircase chandelier or a slim vertical cascade follows the helix without crowding the core.
- Narrow or enclosed stairwell. Choose staircase pendant lights or compact stairwell light fixtures; add wall sconces or modern hallway light fixtures on landings.
- Straight run with a landing. A single stairway chandelier over the landing plus hanging lights for staircase transitions.
What size chandelier for a staircase?
Three numbers matter: diameter, overall length (drop), and clearance.
Diameter. Add the width and depth of the open area in feet; the total, in inches, is a balanced diameter. Most designers round up toward 18″–48″ for presence in a two-story space.
Overall length / drop. For a compact fixture, allow about 2.5–3 inches of fixture height per foot of ceiling height. A true long staircase chandelier should fill the void: in two-story stairwells a cascading drop that spans most of the vertical space looks far more intentional. Custom drop length is the safest route for tall stairwells.
Clearance. Keep the bottom of the fixture at least 7 feet above the floor for a single-story entry, and at least 9 feet for a two-story foyer or open staircase. A common rule is to align the bottom of the chandelier with the second-floor level or the top of the banister.

How bright should staircase lighting be? (lumens)
Aim for roughly 100 lumens per square foot of the open area, then add 10–20% for very tall ceilings or dark finishes. Quick reference:
| Staircase type | Recommended total lumens |
| Small (≈25 sq ft) | 2,500–3,500 lm |
| Standard (≈40 sq ft) | 4,000–5,500 lm |
| Medium (≈50 sq ft) | 5,000–7,000 lm |
| Large (≈75 sq ft) | 7,500–10,500 lm |
| Two-story open staircase (100+ sq ft) | 10,000–15,000 lm |
| Spiral staircase | 3,000–6,000 lm |
For residential stairwells, warm white 2700K–3000K is the most flattering color temperature. The best schemes layer light: an overhead staircase chandelier for drama, plus step lights or LED strips and landing sconces for safety. Many modern staircase lighting fixtures are LED and dimmable.
Styles & finishes that work on stairs
- Modern staircase chandeliers — glass globes, linear cascades, minimalist metalwork in black or gold.
- Crystal staircase chandeliers — reflect light beautifully down a tall stairwell; ideal for luxury stairwell lighting.
- Cascading chandeliers — staggered drops that mirror the diagonal of the stairs.
- Black & gold / contemporary — architectural, clean lines for modern interiors.
Installation, sloped ceilings & safety
Staircase lighting fixtures can be adapted for vaulted or sloped ceilings, though this may require a custom canopy, adjustable cables, or a modified suspension system — confirm before production. Plan installation over the open void (not directly above the treads) so the fixture and future bulb changes are reachable. Most stairwell chandeliers can be made dimmable depending on the LED driver and wall dimmer.
Staircase lighting ideas
- A single long chandelier for staircase voids in a double-height foyer.
- A cascading chandelier that follows the stair diagonal for movement.
- A crystal chandelier for staircase spaces to bounce daylight from a tall window.
- A spiral staircase chandelier dropping through the center of a helix.
- Layered: overhead staircase chandelier + staircase hanging lights on landings + step LEDs.
Frequently asked questions
What chandelier works best for staircases? One with enough vertical presence for the stairwell — long staircase chandeliers, cascading designs, crystal chandeliers for staircases, or multi-light pendant compositions for open, multi-level spaces.
How large should a staircase chandelier be? Diameter ≈ width + depth of the opening (in feet, read as inches); overall length should fill the void while keeping the bottom 7–9 ft above the floor.
How bright should a stairwell be? Roughly 100 lumens per square foot — about 4,000–7,000 lm for a typical staircase and 10,000–15,000 lm for a two-story open stairwell, in warm white 2700–3000K.
What is the best chandelier for a two-story staircase? A long chandelier for staircase voids, a cascading chandelier, or a multi-tier stairwell chandelier that extends vertically without blocking views.
Can staircase chandeliers be customized? Yes — height, cable length, canopy, finish, number of lights and color temperature can usually be tailored, especially for double-height foyers and multi-story stairwells.
