Start with where the light will go. The IP rating on each product page shows how well it handles water:
IP44: protected from splashes. Best for covered porches and entries under a roof overhang.
IP54: protected from rain and dust. Fine for most walls that get some weather.
IP65: protected from water jets. A safe pick for open walls, gardens and spots you hose down.
IP67: can handle brief immersion. Use it in low spots where rainwater collects.
Then think about light color. Warm light looks softer on brick, wood and stone and is easier on the eyes at an entrance. Cool light gives a crisper look on modern facades and helps when you want clear visibility on steps or a driveway.
Are these lights waterproof?
It depends on the rating. Fixtures rated IP65 and IP67 are built for full exposure to rain and can go on open walls. IP44 and IP54 models handle rain and splashes and do best under some cover, such as a porch roof or eave.
