A simple rule: add the room's length and width in feet, and use that sum in inches as the chandelier's ideal diameter. For a 14 by 16 ft living room that is about a 30-inch fixture. If the chandelier hangs over a coffee table or a seating group rather than centering the whole room, size it to roughly half to two-thirds the width of that furniture instead. For tall or double-height rooms, favor a taller multi-tier design so the fixture stays in proportion.
In an open living room with standard 8-foot ceilings, keep the bottom of the chandelier about 7 feet (84 inches) above the floor so people can walk beneath it comfortably. Add roughly 3 inches of height for every extra foot of ceiling above 8 feet. When the chandelier hangs over a coffee table, console or dining surface, lower it to about 30 to 34 inches above the tabletop.
As a rule of thumb, add your room's length and width in feet and read the total as inches for a balanced diameter, then keep the bottom of the fixture at least 7 feet above the floor (or 30-36 inches above a dining table).
