Ceiling height decides the mount before style does. A standard American nursery has an 8 ft or 9 ft ceiling, and that leaves very little room to hang anything.

How do you calculate the right diameter?
The diameter rule designers use is simple arithmetic: room length in feet plus room width in feet equals the fixture diameter in inches.

Treat the result as a centre point, not a hard limit. Going 2-3 inches under keeps a small room calm; going 2-3 inches over reads as a deliberate feature. What you want to avoid is a 12 inch dish floating in the middle of a 12 ft room, which is the single most common nursery lighting mistake.
Fixture listings often give sizes in centimetres. A Dia 40 cm fixture is 15.7 inches, Dia 50 cm is 19.7 inches, and Dia 60 cm is 23.6 inches, so a 10 x 12 room lands almost exactly on the 50 cm option.
How high should a nursery light hang, and where?
Three clearances matter. Keep the bottom of the fixture at least 7 feet (84 inches) above the floor so an adult carrying a baby on their shoulder never comes near it. Keep it out of the airspace directly above the crib, both for reassurance and so that a lying baby is not staring straight into a light source. And keep at least 2 feet of clearance from the ceiling fan blade path if the room has a fan.
Centering the fixture on the room rather than on the crib solves nearly all of this. If the room is long and narrow, centre it on the seating and changing zone instead, where you actually need to see.

Can a ceiling light go directly above the crib?
It is better not to. Centre the fixture on the room instead. A light directly overhead means a lying baby looks straight into the source, and it adds an avoidable worry about anything above the sleeping space.
