Space ceiling fixtures 6 to 8 feet apart along the run, and set the first one about 3 feet in from the end wall so the corridor does not fall dark at the ends. A 20-foot hallway therefore takes three fixtures. If you are using wall sconces instead, place them every 8 to 10 feet, alternating sides on a wide corridor. Even spacing matters more than raw output here: several modest fixtures read far better than one bright one casting a single pool of light.
A hallway is a transit space, so it needs less than a room you sit in: plan for 5 to 10 lumens per square foot, which usually means 300 to 500 lumens per fixture. A 4 by 20 ft corridor at 80 sq ft therefore wants roughly 600 to 800 lumens spread across three fixtures. Choose 2700K to 3000K warm white so the hallway feels continuous with the rooms it connects. A dimmer or a low-output night setting is worth adding on a route between bedrooms and a bathroom.
Keep at least 7 feet (84 inches) of clearance between the floor and the bottom of any fixture in a walkway. On a standard 8-foot ceiling that rules out pendants and points to a flush mount, which drops only 4 to 8 inches. A 9-foot ceiling allows a semi-flush design hanging 8 to 14 inches down. Wall sconces in a hallway sit best with their centre 60 to 70 inches from the floor, roughly eye level, and should project no more than 4 to 5 inches from the wall in a narrow corridor.
Add the entry's length and width in feet and read the total as inches for the fixture diameter: a 6 by 8 ft entry suits a 14-inch fixture. For a two-story foyer, size up to 20 to 30 inches and hang the fixture so its bottom clears the floor by at least 7 feet; where a window faces the street, centre the fixture in the window so it reads correctly from outside. Allow roughly 3 inches of extra drop for every foot of ceiling above 8 feet.
