As a rule of thumb, a single wall light beside a front door should be about one-quarter to one-third the height of the door — roughly 14 to 22 inches (35 to 56 cm) for a standard 80-inch door. If you mount a fixture on each side, size each one closer to one-quarter of the door height so the pair does not overwhelm the entry. For a large or double-height entrance, size up or add a hanging lantern above the door.
