Flush Mount Chandelier Sizing & Ceiling Height

Flush mount chandeliers exist to solve one problem: how to get the presence of a chandelier into a room that cannot spare the headroom. That makes ceiling height the first question rather than an afterthought. A true flush mount drops 4 to 8 inches and belongs on ceilings of 8 feet or lower; a semi-flush hangs 8 to 14 inches down and suits 9 feet. Diameter follows the room — length plus width in feet, read as inches — with long corridors better served by two or three smaller fixtures than one large one. Brightness runs about 20 lumens per square foot in a bedroom and 30 to 40 in a kitchen or bathroom, where IP ratings also come into play. The answers below give the specific numbers for each.
