The first thing to think about when choosing a new table lamp is where and for what purposes you will use it. Depending on the size of the room, you can choose from different types of table lamps. Below we will consider the main places of application of table lamps.
Bedside table lamps (often referred to as bedside lamps) are those lamps that set on the bedside table next to the bed. Typically, bedside lamps come in pairs, one per nightstand on each side of the bed.
Although the lamps may be the same, you can choose different ones. If you like one type of lamp and your partner likes another, then it's okay to have stylistically coordinated but not different bedside lamps.
Ideally, the bedside lamps you choose should match with the rest of the furniture in your bedroom. If you have large bedside tables, the lamps should also be large. If you have small nightstands, then it is better to choose small or miniature lamps.
Useful tip for choosing a bedside table lamp: in case you are going to read in bed, then the height of the bedside lamp will be of particular importance. According to the rules, the nightstand should be the same height as your mattress, and the bottom edge of the lamp shade should match your chin when you sit in bed with a book.
A lamp that is taller will create glare when you sit next to it. A lamp that is too low will not light your book properly.
While many types of table lamps are designed to help you see better by illuminating an area, decorative lamps are more for visual comfort. They certainly add light to the room, but they should not be used as directional lighting.
If you're decorating a child's room, you can choose a lamp shaped like one of your child's favorite cartoon characters, or choose a lamp shaped like a butterfly or a racing car.
If you have a home office, even if it's just a small table in the corner of the room, you need a table lamp to light up any projects or tasks you're working on. How well lit your workspace has a direct impact on your productivity and health.
Often table lamps have an adjustable arm so you can position the light directly above your workspace or adjust the angle of the light to better illuminate your work.
As with bedside lamps, the size of a table lamp should match the size of your desk. If you have a compact desk or workspace, choose a small one. A large table requires a large lamp.
3.1. Banker's lamp
Banker's table lamps (or the so-called banker's lamp) are a separate type of desktop lamp. Historically, they were made with a brass base, a green glass shade and a pull cord switch. Banker's lamp is now also available in other colors.
Because the lamp shines down, it is also often used on top of pianos to illuminate music. You may see banker's lamps on tables in large libraries such as the main branch of the New York Public Library.
